SA's only polar research vessel, the SA Aghulas has been dispatched to rescue a 24-year-old scientist, believed to be badly injured on Marion Island.

Department of Environmental Affairs spokesperson Carol Moses said the researcher fell into the cold Arctic waters while taking photographs.

The department would not release his name, disclosing only that he was from Limpopo.

"He was involved in research on marine mammals and was conducting photographic research when he fell into the very cold and icy waters," said Moses.

When he was eventually pulled from the water he was unconscious and suffering from hypothermia, but had since regained consciousness and was in a stable condition.

Moses said the extent of the researcher's injuries had still not been established and this would be disclosed after further tests from the medical crew on board the SA Aghulas.

"We did not receive a report on his injuries but it is of the nature that would require him to be evacuated from the island," said Moses.
