A ten-day quarantine has been declared at a Johannesburg prison where 51 cases of measles had been confirmed, the correctional services department said on Monday.
"From October 26 to Wednesday, November 4, court appearances, new admissions of remand detainees and public visitations at the centre will be suspended in order to safeguard the public's health and prevent further infections," the ministry said in a statement.
"The department of correctional services, in consultation with the department of health, has declared a ten-day-quarantine at the Johannesburg Medium A Correctional Centre following a confirmation of 51 cases of measles."
The health department will lead a vaccination programme to inoculate more than 6000 awaiting trial prisoners and 400 correctional services officials.

During the quarantine period, about 3 000 scheduled appearances at 27 courts will be halted.
"Arrangements will be put in place to address the backlog of these appearances and to facilitate family and legal representative visits as soon as the quarantine period is over," said the department.
Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will visit the facility at 10am on Monday. - Sapa
