The police in the Western Cape said on Friday that 22 people had been arrested on Thursday night at De Doorns in connection with attacks on foreigners earlier in the week.

Superintendent Desmond van der Westhuizen said the people were alleged to have been involved in public violence during Tuesday's confrontations between locals and foreign workers.

More than 3 000 people, most of them Zimbabweans, evacuated shacks in De Doorns when locals claimed that the foreigners were robbing them of jobs on farms in the area.

Another four people were arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing from the refugees' shacks. - Sapa
