A teenager who allegedly kidnapped an eight-month-old baby for a muti killing three months ago will appear in court next month, the Sowetan newspaper reported on Thursday.

Baby Elsie Gwedlu, now 11 months old, was abducted by a 15-year-old girl from the Barcelona informal settlement near Benoni in September.

The teenager alleged she was instructed by another woman to kidnap Gwedlu, who was to have been killed for muti.

The muti was to have been used by the teenager's boyfriend, who wanted to evade arrest for armed robbery.

According to the report, the woman rented a shack for the teenager and baby at the Barcelona informal settlement.

The teenager was allegedly instructed by the woman to give Gwedlu sorghum beer to make her sleep.

Following a tip-off from members of the community, Gwedlu was rescued by police more than a week after her abduction and a day before she was to have been killed.

Inspector Saul Mdletshe told the Sowetan that the teenager, a high school dropout, was currently being held at a place of safety.

She will appear in the Benoni regional court on December 6.

The baby and mother have since moved to another location. - Sapa
