There are at least one million images of child pornography on the Internet at any given time.
Iyavar Chetty, deputy chief of the Film and Publications Board, told the Wynberg Sexual Offences Court in Cape Town on Thursday that child pornography was a "highly profitable trade" and that 99 percent of child pornographic images were downloaded via the Internet.
Chetty was testifying on the state's behalf in aggravation of the sentence of convicted paedophile William Creasey.
In April of this year Creasey, a former high school teacher, pleaded guilty to several counts of indecent assault, the possession of child pornography and the contravention of the Film and Publications Act.

This trauma lasted a lifetime because children lacked the capacity to deal with trauma At the time, Creasey's child pornography had been the largest haul ever discovered in the Western Cape.
In court on Thursday, before magistrate Susan Smith, Chetty spoke of the trauma experienced by children who were abused through pornography.
Chetty said they usually lost self-esteem and experienced anti-social and emotional problems. This trauma lasted a lifetime because children lacked the capacity to deal with trauma.
Referring to the images found in Creasey's possession, Chetty said they were typical of the pornographic images of children available on the Internet. He described them as "very disturbing" and "invasive of the child's well-being".
Chetty testified that amendments to South Africa's law meant there would be better policing. The new law had redefined child pornography to include the word "anus".
However, Cadle said she had been unaware that Creasey had thought that of her He added that the uses of child pornography included sexual arousal and blackmail, and that pornography helped paedophiles to justify their behaviour through global contact with millions of like-minded people.
Chetty said people involved with children, like teachers, bore a higher responsibility than others.
