South Africa still has its sights on German fraudster Jurgen Harksen, currently serving a six-year and nine month jail sentence in his home country, according to National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

In a briefing to the National Assembly's safety and security committee, Selebi said there were a number of people South Africa wanted from Germany and Harksen was among them.

Harksen is facing fraud charges in South Africa.

"We do want Harksen here, because the matters that he faced here were not concluded. People were in a hurry to send him away. The understanding was that after he was sentenced we would get him back," Selebi said.

A German envoy told the Cape Times on Wednesday that he understood Harksen would be returned after serving his sentence.

Selebi also said there were other individuals who were involved in "very serious things, which I am not ready to discuss now, who we want from Germany".

It could not be established whether Selebi was referring to the weapons of mass destruction investigation which analysts have linked to a weapons ring spanning 20 countries.
