Tshwane's executive mayor Gwen Ramokgopa will be driving around in style - but at no expense to the taxpayer, according to the Metro Council.

A hastily-called Press conference yesterday was aimed at introducing the media to the "new" mayoral car, but it turned out to be a bid to set the record straight following a newspaper report yesterday that claimed the mayor had a lavish taste in cars.

Displaying the provisional mayoral car, a black BMW 750i, the council's chief operating officer Jackie Makgobola said following discussions with BMW, the council had reached an agreement with the company on April 18 that an official car would be delivered on May 5.

"The municipality appeals to the media to desist from untruthful speculation, which is a deliberate effort to mislead the public," he said.

He confirmed that the council had formed a relationship with BMW over the past few years. In terms of this, the company loans cars to the council "free of charge" for use by the mayor in office.

Mayoral spokesman Richard Mtkholo said decisions regarding the model and colour were made solely by BMW management.
