The condition of Eric, the "gentleman" baboon who was attacked by two pit-bull dogs in Kommetjie earlier this week, is unchanged and he remains in a serious condition.

The two dogs were allegedly set loose by their owners to attack the 20-year-old animal on Tuesday afternoon.

The owners - aged 14 and 17 - were arrested and face charges of animal cruelty.

It's alleged that they goaded and then let their dogs loose after spotting Eric - a long-time alpha male of the Kommetjie troop before he was displaced by a younger, stronger baboon - while walking with their animals on Main Road.

On Thursday evening, Marlei Martins of Baboon Matters, the non-profit organisation that managed the baboon monitors until recently, said Eric's condition remained unchanged.

"The boy's condition hasn't changed, he's still very weak and still not eating, and that's what's very worrying," she said.

Vets were expected to conduct an assessment on Eric today, she said.

"We're still hoping that there won't be any need for surgery, but an assessment needs to be conducted first," she said.

At this stage, it was difficult to predict whether Eric would make a full recovery but they were hoping so, she added.
