Kinshasa - Ten people died and eight others went missing on Thursday when their boat capsized on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Bas-Congo province, in the south-west of the country, Okapi radio station said.

The boat, which was carrying 60 people, overturned when its was hit by waves after another boat crossed its path near Kimwabi island, 50km from the town of Bomba, the United Nations-sponsored radio station said.

The missing passengers were mainly children.

Okapi said the passengers were on their way to vacation at Kimwabi but only 31 of them had been declared to river authorities when the boat left Boma.
