The old city hall in the Johannesburg central business district was gutted in a fire on Sunday, emergency services said.

Spokesperson Nana Radebe said around 30 firefighters were still on the scene on Sunday night.

"We are now using exterior firefighting methods... The building has been completely gutted on the inside," she said.

The building, across the street from the Gauteng Legislature, was currently under construction.

This made it difficult for firefighters to enter it. By late on Sunday, two floors of the building had collapsed.

Fire safety workers were on the scene to conduct preliminary investigations into the cause of the fire, once it has been extinguished.
