A small Boland community is battling to come to terms with the mystifying death of a local man who allegedly accidentally shot himself in the toilet at a karaoke event.

The Idas Valley Community in Stellenbosch is mourning the death of Quinton Daniels, 22, who is said to have accidentally shot himself in the head with an illegal gun at a fundraising event at the Luckhoff Secondary School on Saturday evening.

Inspector Bernard Adams of the Cloetesville police said Daniels was under the influence of liquor while attending the function. At some point during the evening Daniels had asked a friend to accompany him to the toilet where he started playing with an illegal firearm and accidentally shot himself in the head.

He was rushed to Stellenbosch hospital where he died on Sunday evening.

On Monday his aunt, Francina Jonathan, who raised Daniels, said she was still battling to come to terms with his death.

"One of Quinton's friends knocked on our door very late on Saturday night and told us what happened. I was so shocked because it was the last thing I expected and even now I can't believe it."

Daniels's death had rocked the community because he was well-liked and several people had come to the family to sympathise and offer their help with funeral arrangements.

His cousin Gail Jonathan, 28, said Daniels was like a brother to her and she would miss him. - Staff Reporter.
