A kitesurfer has drowned in the shallow water off Macassar beach after having problems with his kite.

Six kitesurfers were taking advantage of the strong south-easterly winds at sunset on Wednesday when Pierre Nel's kite plunged into the shallow surf.

A friend from the Strand, who asked not to be named, said: "I (was) quite a way away, so I couldn't see exactly what happened. The wind was quite strong... Something went wrong with his kite, it started looping.

"It pulled him though the water for quite a long way.

'His fellow sportsmen tried to revive him'
"He was in shallow water; we're not sure if he drowned or if he hit his head, but we think he must have taken in a lot of water while he was being dragged."

The kite dragged Nel on to the beach, where his fellow sportsmen tried to revive him.

"We tried CPR, but it was already too late.

"You feel so useless. You want to do something but you can't," the friend said.

Police and medical staff arrived on the scene later.

Nel was originally from Gauteng but moved to the Cape some months ago.

His family in Gauteng was informed of his death on Wednesday night.
