A Spanish fishing trawler which got into difficulty just off the Durban coast on Monday night was towed into the harbour on Tuesday afternoon.

The Acechador's crew sent out a distress signal late on Monday night after their ship started sinking about 40 nautical miles (74km) off Durban.

The 17 men were airlifted to safety by the National Sea Rescue Institute, National Ports Authority and the SA Navy.

Captain Theo Stokes, commander of the SAS Protea, which responded to the distress call, said they were the third vessel to arrive beside the stricken Acechador.
