 Baby fighting for its life in hospital

    A teenage Transkei pupil on trial for killing her new-born baby last year was arrested at the weekend after her second child was found in a bag minutes after his birth.

    Miraculously, the baby survived. Villagers found the wailing tot tied up in a plastic packet.

    "I heard a cry like that of a cat only to find that it was a baby inside a Shoprite plastic bag," said Sakhumzi Mkhunqe.

    The area next to the plastic bag, which was covered with blood, is a stone's throw from the home of the schoolgirl mother, who lives with her older sister.

    A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "Even her sister claimed she was not aware of the pregnancy."
