An 89-year-old woman died after she was allegedly stabbed with a bush knife by her son on Saturday morning in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga police said.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the woman had an argument with her 60-year-old son.

"It is not known what led to the argument but he attacked her and she died on the scene. He was arrested."

A murder docket was opened and the man was expected to appear in court on Monday.

In a separate incident a 12-year-old boy - who was looking after his neighbour's house - was raped by an unknown man at Driefontein near Piet Retief on Friday.
