Metro police over the weekend raided Johannesburg's Melville streets and bars and promised anti-crime drives more in the future.

Said metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar on Sunday: "There [have] been a lot of complaints of drug use and loud music.

About 400 patrons were searched at the Social bar and the Stripes nightclub on Friday night and both clubs were ordered to close their doors at 2am.

"The focus of the operation was to stop and search vehicles, occupants and the patrons of the clubs for drugs and illegal firearms, and also for the roadworthiness of vehicles in the streets, to arrest drivers under in the influence and to charge for traffic offences."
