A 72-year-old man from Kwanobuhle was arrested after he mutilated and killed his dog, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said police received a call on Monday night about a man who was slaughtering his dog.

"The dismembered carcass of the dog was hung up on a fence and the animal's intestines were found in a bag.

"The dog's head was also found, hanging on a gate," she said.

The man claimed that the mongrel was having a seizure and he wanted to see what was wrong, so he cut the dog open.

The man will be facing charges of violating the Animal Protection Act and will appear in the Uitenhage magistrate's court on Wednesday. - Sapa
