A third man was arrested on Saturday following the robbery of a Witbank casino last month, Mpumalanga police said.

This followed the granting of bail on Friday, of R10 000 each, to Bongani Nsimbi Dladla, 29, and Thembezakhe Zuma, 36, previously arrested in connection the crime, Captain Leonard Hlathi said on Sunday.

After their hearing however, the duo was immediately re-arrested by Free State police for casino robberies in that province.

The Ridge Casino robbery involved four armed men, who were part of a larger group, who entered the casino around 3.45pm on June 13.

Two shots were fired into the casino's entertainment area, causing patrons to flee.

The men, one armed with an AK-47 rifle, ordered casino staff to open the vault containing cash. The staff complied, the men took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.

On their way out of the casino police confronted them. A shoot-out ensued.

"The vehicle that the policemen were in was riddled with bullets."

Constable Frederick Maleke was shot in the leg and Constable Paul Mthimunye was hit in the head.

Both police officers were expected to recover.

The third man arrested, in his early 40s, was expected to appear in Witbank Magistrates' court on Monday.

Dladla and Zuma would appear again on August 11. They faced charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. - Sapa
