 Surfer details the 'lowest point' in his life

Top Durban-born surfer Shaun Tomson has crested some of the world's most terrifying waves, but it took the death of his son in 2006 to show him that the surfer's optimism of "waiting for the next wave" could be applied to his life and used as inspiration for others.

He describes the death of his 15-year old son in a freak "choking game" accident as the lowest point in his life. At that time a "simple little book" Tomson had written about the surfer's code was at the press being printed.

Tomson said the code, which calls for determination, courage and optimism, helped him rebuild his life after his son's death.

It was also a way of giving back to the sport that had made him an international name.

Its message of courage, determination and inspiration helped Tomson rebuild his life after his son's death.

Tomson, internationally renowned as a professional surfer, world champion, environmentalist and businessman, added author to his list of achievements almost accidentally.
