A Pietermaritzburg woman who allegedly killed her two young children last week will be sent for psychological assessment.
Zanele Mngadi, 24, made a brief appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court yesterday.
She has been charged with the murders of her daughter Ntobeko, 5, and her brother Xolani, 3, at their Sweetwaters kraal, and for defeating the ends of justice.
It is believed that Mngadi had killed them because she did not want a man, who is known to her, to stand trial for raping Ntobeko.
The rape occurred last month, but Mngadi's relatives only found out about it two days before the murders, and then reported it to police.

The man has been charged with rape and appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court again on Monday.
He was remanded in custody.
It is alleged that a day before the murders, Mngadi had threatened to kill herself and her children, on returning home from the man's first court appearance.
However, her mother said Mngadi had later calmed down and she had not expected her to act on the threats.
The children were found lying on a bed after they had been stabbed and hacked to death. Their throats were also slit.
Mngadi has been remanded in custody. A bed has been arranged for her at Fort Napier Hospital where her psychological assessment will take place.
