The leader of a gang of men, who killed a 65-year-old Hillcrest man at his home last year was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Durban High Court on Thursday.
John van der Westhuizen was killed in front of his wife, Jennifer Ann, at their West Riding home. The robbers took cellphones, cash, jewellery, computers, a gun and two cars.
The robbers - Nkululeko Mbatha, 19, Sbongiseni Phetha, 20, and Linda Mhlongo, 22 - were found a few days after the murder by the investigating officer, Inspector Jabulani Zulu from the provincial house robbery unit.
They were all charged with murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Phetha and Mhlongo pleaded not guilty to both charges, while Mbatha pleaded guilty to the robbery.
