An 18-year-old man who allegedly stabbed another man following an argument over beer was arrested in Sharpeville on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Inspector Aubrey Moopeloa said the man was arrested in the township's Tshepisong section following the death of a 23-year-old man at 12.50am on Saturday.

"The 23-year-old apparently asked for beer from the 18-year-old at a shebeen in Tshepisong. When the man refused, he allegedly took out his knife... but the younger man wrestled the knife from his grip and stabbed him five times," he said.

The 23-year-old died on the spot and his alleged killer fled the scene.

The arrested man, who was not injured during the incident, was expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of murder. - Sapa
