The Free State's public accounts oversight committee on Monday decided to lay charges against Nala municipal manager David Shongwe, for misleading it while under oath.
Democratic Alliance committee member Peter Frewen welcomed the decision.
"It is time that municipal managers and heads of departments realise that the Propac (Provincial Public Accounts Committee) should be regarded in a serious light," he said in a statement.
Frewen said the committee's decision followed Shongwe being asked by Propac whether an internal investigation into fraud and corruption at the municipality was being done. Shongwe stated that auditors KPMG were busy with this.
When KPMG was asked about the investigation, this was found to be untrue, Frewen said.

Shongwe was subpoenaed to appear before Propac on Monday, for a third time, and the decision to lay charges was taken.
Shongwe, Nala's former chief financial officer, who was appointed municipal manager only recently, earlier this month had a tough time before the committee answering questions on wasted public funds and the disappearance of supporting documents for municipal audits.
The KPMG probe was mentioned when committee members indicated a special investigation should be held into the affairs of Nala. The Nala municipality covers the Bothaville and Wesselsbron areas. - Sapa
