Three men were arrested and a fourth was wounded during a gun battle with police in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, on Wednesday, authorities said.

The four were spotted in a suspected hijacked car in Pretoria West, said Inspector Daniel Mavimbela.

"The suspects opened fire when the police approached them and the cops shot back. This led to a high-speed chase into Atteridgeville, where the suspects were cornered at Sekhukhuni Street."

A 30-year-old man was shot in the lower body. He was under police guard at a local hospital.

Three handguns, ammunition and BMW 530d believed to have been hijacked in Brooklyn, east of Pretoria, last month were recovered.
