A Johannesburg metro police officer was shot four times in Midrand when he stopped a suspicious-looking car on Tuesday.

Johannes Kau, 43, was rushed to Kirstenhof Clinic and stabilised before being airlifted to Milpark Hospital, Metro police spokesperson Inspector Edna Manonyane said.

He was in a serious but stable condition on Wednesday but still had to undergo surgery.

Kau was overpowered and robbed of his service pistol by the driver and passenger of a red Mazda bakkie he had stopped.

He was shot four times with his pistol and was wounded in his left shoulder, arm, wrist and on the right side of his abdomen.

The attackers made their escape in the bakkie, which was later found in a parking lot in Midrand.

Witnesses told the police they saw three occupants getting out of the vehicle and driving off in a minibus taxi, parked at a nearby rank.

The registration number of the taxi was later established to be false. - Sapa
