Correctional services national commissioner Linda Mti and his senior management are to be questioned by the National Assembly's correctional services committee about the circumstances of the release of an alleged child rapist.
The 24-year-old man appeared in court in Cape Town on Wednesday in connection with the rape of a three-year-old girl at the weekend.
According to media reports, he had earlier served a five-year sentence for sodomising a nine-year-old boy.
Committee chairperson Dennis Bloem said on Thursday he was "very angry" about the incident and taking the issue very seriously.
If the suspect was indeed guilty of the latest offence, he and the committee would want answers from the department.

The committee would ask Mti and other senior officials to appear before them "soon" to explain the circumstances and reasons for the alleged rapist's release, possibly during the recent special remission of sentence for some offenders who "pose no danger to society".
"If he was really released on special remission I need answers, because the minister (of correctional services Ngconde Balfour) clearly stated only certain categories of offenders will be granted remission," he said.
Those guilty of "aggressive" crimes, such as murder, robbery, serious assault, and sexual crimes were excluded.
Bloem said he wanted to assure the community that the committee would not "keep silent" and would hold the department accountable for its actions. - Sapa
