Pretoria police caught 10 bank robbers in the act during a break-in at the Lyttelton branch of Absa in the early hours of Monday morning.

Spokesperson Inspector Lucas Sithole said the police's information-gathering unit and a special task force had been keeping watch on the bank.

The 10 robbers had come equipped with jackhammers, a grinder, five boxes of blades, an extension cord and crowbars.

"A security guard, who had been bound by his feet and hands and put in the boot of a stolen car, knocked on the boot to alert police," said Sithole.

The security guard had been kidnapped earlier in the evening, he said.

Sithole said the 10 would appear "very soon" in the Pretoria magistrate's court. - Sapa
