Francisco Carreira was believed to have murdered his former wife and daughter-in-law before killing himself. But now his son has appeared in the Pretoria district court on murder charges
Fermina Carreira, daughter-in-law Elia and Francisco Carreira were killed on September 3.
It was alleged at the time that Francisco shot the two women in a house in Pretoria West before turning the gun on himself.
But Jose Manuel Rodrigues Carreira, 31, of Pietermaritzburg, has now been arrested in connection with the murders.
| 'It was alleged at the time that Francisco shot the two women' | Neighbours said Francisco had not seen his family for years after his former wife moved to Pietermaritzburg to stay with their son, Jose, and his wife and eight-year-old daughter. According to neighbours, Francisco was staying in the house of his former wife and was asked to move. The family drove up from Pietermaritzburg as the older man apparently refused to do so.
Jose apparently stopped and hooted at the gate. It was alleged that everyone went inside the house, but that the little girl wanted something from the car.

Jose accompanied her and Francisco and locked the door. Shots were heard. The two women were both shot in the head. It was reported that Francisco allegedly stormed outside and then shot himself in the head.
But in a twist to the tale Jose was arrested slightly more than a week after the shootings.
On Monday the State informed the court it would oppose Jose's release on bail. The accused indicated he would apply for legal aid and wanted to know why he could not be granted bail.
The court explained to him that he would have to bring a formal bail application. The case was then postponed to next month for further investigation. - Court Reporter.
