A Mamelodi father who raped and indecently assaulted his 12-year-old daughter was on Tuesday sentenced in the Pretoria High Court to 21 years in prison.
The 39-year-old father of four came home drunk one night in 2002. His wife was not home and he accused his victim of stealing R5. The man gave her a hiding and then raped her, after which he indecently assaulted her.
The man pleaded not guilty to the charges, but was earlier convicted on both charges in the regional court. The matter was referred to the High Court for sentencing as he was facing a life term behind bars.

The court heard on Tuesday that although the child was not physically injured, she suffered severe emotional scars. The child said she loved her father very much and did not want him to go to jail. But on the other hand the child told a social worker she was afraid of him.
Judge Johan Els was told the incident had torn the family apart. But he said he was sending the accused to jail for a long time not only to punish him, but also to deter other would-be child rapists.
