A Cape Town traffic officer was seriously assaulted in a road-rage attack in Brooklyn, after pulling over a motorist for suspected driving under the influence of alcohol.
Deon Sampson, based at Gallows Hill in Green Point, was taken to hospital after the driver of a BMW beat him up in Koeberg Road on Saturday night.
And a bystander who allegedly stood and watched as Sampson was attacked by the Parklands driver has been charged as well.
The furious motorist is alleged to have chased Sampson around his patrol car and over parked cars in a nearby lot.
A charge of serious assault is being investigated. However, the suspect is accusing Sampson of throwing the first punch.

Sampson got away eventually and radioed for help. Traffic patrol cars arrived and the driver was arrested.
A Maitland policeman said a bystander, who allegedly refused to help and "just watched, gloating", was being charged with "failing to assist a traffic officer when called upon to do so".
Acting traffic manager Alex Lawrence said on Monday that he was gathering details for his department's own investigation.
The suspect spent the rest of the weekend in Maitland police cells and was expected to be brought to Cape Town magistrate's court on Monday for a bail application.
Milnerton Medi-Clinic discharged Sampson early on Sunday.
