A woman who police suspect may be a National Intelligence Agency (NIA) member was robbed of R250 000 in cash yesterday as she parked outside the South African Revenue Service office at Gateway.

She was accosted by five armed men as she was parking her car outside the Sars office yesterday afternoon, said police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge.

"Before she could get out of the vehicle, five men held her at gunpoint, forced her out of the vehicle and took the money."

The suspects fled in a car.

Police are trying to get CCTV footage of the men.

Mdunge said investigations were at a sensitive stage and police suspect the woman could have been bringing in money to the Sars offices.

"While this may be a strong possibility, we need to go through the correct channels in establishing at which of the NIA offices this woman works. Then only can we confirm that this is true.

"This crime was conducted as though it was very well planned," said Mdunge.

"Police are investigating claims that the woman has links to the Pretoria offices. We are questioning the Sars office as well as the NIA."

Last night, the Sars office refused to comment on the incident.
