A Durbanville cyclist was killed instantly when a car crashed into him on Klipheuwel Road in Kraaifontein early yesterday.

This is the first serious cycling accident of the training season for next year's Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. Five cyclists were killed on city roads in the training season between November and February for this year's Cycle Tour.

The cyclist, 42, was riding alone when he was hit by a navy blue car.

Last night police declined to release his name as his family had not yet been informed. Kraaifontein police spokesman Captain Gerhard Niemand said only the man's wife had been notified.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

The driver of the Jetta, 49, has not been arrested but is expected to appear in court early this week.

Pedal Power Association chairman Steve Hayward said: "It's really sad. Last year we had five people killed on our roads before the tour. We just hope this is not repeated, so we appeal to motorists to be vigilant.

Hayward said the association had been booking Tuesday evenings at Killarney race track for cyclists to train off the roads.
