 Infant critically injured in accident

A one-year-old boy is fighting for his life in a Durban hospital after a motor vehicle accident that also left his ten-year-old brother, mother and uncle seriously injured.

The car they were travelling in left Otto Volek Road, Pinetown in the vicinity of Shepstone Road this morning.

What caused the man behind the wheel to lose control of the vehicle remains unknown.

It is believed that he swerved violently from the roadway onto the grass verge before plummeting into a roadside storm drain which, fortunately for them, was empty at the time.

Netcare911 Paramedics attending the scene rushed to the aid of injured, and worked frantically to stabilise the critically injured infant.

The boy had sustained massive head trauma when he was flung forward while on his mothers lap.

His condition took a turn for the worst while at the crash scene and paramedics rushed him to the R.K. Khan Hospital, Chatsworth, for further medical care.

His brother sustained lower limb fractures, while the two adults sustained possible head and spinal trauma.

All were treated and stabilised by Netcare911 Paramedics at the scene before they to were taken to the same Chatsworth hospital for further medical care.

The baby boy remains in a critical condition. His relatives have been assessed to be serious but stable. - Netcare 911
