Five Ramayela Farm School pupils died in a car accident on Monday in Petrus Steyn, Eastern Free State police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Inspector Harry Nagel said the driver of a Toyota Venture transporting eight pupils to school lost control of the vehicle and it overturned on a gravel road at 7.30am.
Lekula Mokoena, Whelemina Mofokeng, Mongamotse Motloung, Modiehi Moloi and Samuel Moloi died on the scene.
Thoso Moloi, Rebecca Dlamini and Aletta Mbongu were taken to Nketoana Hospital in Reitz with serious injuries. The driver was also admitted to hospital.
Nagel said two of the injured pupils were transferred to Bethlehem Hospital. The 26-year-old driver of the vehicle was discharged from hospital and detained at the Petrus Steyn police station.

Police were investigating charges of culpable homicide.
"There is a possibility that the driver lost control of the vehicle because he was driving too fast," said Nagel.
The driver would appear in court on Wednesday or Thursday. - Sapa
