Metro police arrested 12 drivers allegedly speeding on the N1 North highway near the Olifantsfontein junction, Gauteng metro police said on Sunday.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said police conducted the operation from 9pm on Saturday to 6am on Sunday.

A 26-year-old man was arrested while allegedly travelling at 213km/h in his Ford Focus.

All 12 were granted bail of R1 000 and are scheduled to appear in the Midrand magistrate's court on Monday.

Minnaar said the operation was part of a strategy to reduce speeding and thereby reduce the number of road accidents. - Sapa
