An unknown man and a baby were killed by a train in Riverlea, west of Johannesburg on Friday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

Spokesperson Percy Morokane said the accident happened between Crown and New Canada train stations. It was not clear how the two ended up on the railway.

The man was believed to be in his 30s and the baby was estimated to have been less than a year old, Morokane said.

"It was very difficult to determine the gender of the two because of the mangled state of the bodies. We do not know at this stage whether they were related."
