A total of 20 people were injured in five separate accidents in KwaZulu Natal on Friday and Saturday, paramedics said.

On Saturday afternoon, a motorcyclist sustained head injuries after a car beat a red robot and smashed into him at the Umbilo and Willowvale intersection in Durban.

"He was flung from the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries," Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said.

The man was transported to King Edward Hospital.

On Friday afternoon a woman was seriously injured when her Toyota Tazz collided with another car on the M7 Edwin Swales Drive slipway on the N2 south.

"What caused one car to slam into the back of the other is unknown," said Wicks.

Both cars veered off the road. The Tazz rolled into a storm drain, while the other vehicle came to a stop on its wheels.

"The driver of the Tazz was seriously injured and paramedics at the scene found her trapped in the front seat of her car," Wicks said.

"She was carefully extricated by members of Netcare 911's Rescue Unit and an elaborate rope system was used to aid paramedics in hauling her up the steep embankment once stabilised."

The woman was taken to Saint Augustine's Hospital, while the other driver refused medical attention at the scene. - Sapa
