Ten cars were damaged by stones thrown on the N2 near Nandi Drive, Durban, on Saturday night.
Visiting the scene, The Mercury found planks with protruding nails (possibly placed to puncture tyres), broken number plates, detached badges and plastic mouldings, as well as rocks and pieces of glass strewn about.
Evashna Naidu, owner of a Toyota RunX, was travelling towards Gateway shopping centre when a rock hit the roof of her car, the impact causing the courtesy light to fall off.
"I was driving at a slow speed when I heard a loud bang on the roof. I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw the windscreen of the car behind me shatter," she said.

Naidu, thinking it might be a hijacking ploy, decided not to pull over and drove to the nearest service station, the Petro Port, 100m away.
"When I got to the garage there were several other cars, some with shattered windscreens, some whose tyres had been punctured by something sharp on the road. Others had dents on the exterior of the cars. Luckily, no one was injured."
According to Naidu, the Flying Squad was called three times but there was no response. When contacted by The Mercury, a member of the Flying Squad said it had no knowledge of a report being lodged about the incident.
However, Inspector Lutchmi Parsad of Newlands Police Station said an incident had been reported on Sunday morning for insurance purposes and the suspects were unknown. The possibility that the incident was a hijacking attempt was under investigation.
Police spokesperson Michael Read said he had not heard of the incident but would investigate.
