A blitz on drunken driving in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night netted five motorists and one who was so desperate to evade the authorities that not even a crash could stop him.

The 24-year-old driver of a blue Mazda 323 is expected to appear in court on Monday to face charges of having violated eight traffic regulations while the traffic police chased him through the streets of the province's capital after he tried to evade a roadblock.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Colin Govender said the motorist had crashed into a car parked in Berg Street, in the city centre, during the chase, but even that had not stopped him.

He had continued driving at high speed, but was stopped and arrested soon afterwards.

"He is now facing charges of drunk driving, four counts of driving through red robots, one count of driving down a no-entry road, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to obey the instructions of a traffic officer," Govender said.

The motorist was granted bail of R500.

Govender said it was hoped that the court would send out a strong message to other offenders that this type of behaviour would not be tolerated.

This was the third such incident to occur in the Pietermaritzburg district during a continuing campaign to stamp out drinking and driving.

"We are issuing a warning to motorists that we will not stop. We are planning roadblocks up until Christmas and beyond," said Govender.

Govender urged people to nominate a driver who would stay sober and drive them home.
