Six people were killed in an apparent taxi violence-related shooting between Kranskop and Maphumulo in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands last night.

Police Senior Superintendent Phindile Radebe confirmed that two taxi drivers and four passengers had been shot. It is believed the drivers belonged to the KwaDukuza Taxi Association, which is involved in a long-running, bloody dispute over routes with the Maphumulo Taxi Association.

"They were standing at the side of the road next to their vehicles when a number of men in a vehicle pulled up alongside them and opened fire, hitting them several times. The vehicle then sped off," Radebe said.

By 9.30pm, police were still at the scene, collecting evidence. Cases of murder were opened. It is believed that KwaDukuza and Kranskop taxi operators had concluded an agreement to transport people between the two towns without stopping at Maphumulo.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S'bu Ndebele appealed to the public to assist the police to ensure the speedy arrest of the killers.

The shootings follow a spate of taxi-related violence in the province in the past two weeks.
