Sydney - A woman eased the wedding ring off the finger of an elderly man dying in a Melbourne street and then shooed away passersby who came to his aid, a court in Australia's second biggest city was told on Tuesday.

Suzanne Sekulovska, 30, is charged with theft and endangering life over an incident in February 2004 that led to the death of 69-year-old Adolphous Suares.

Sekulovska met Suares at a casino and was walking with him on the street when the heart attack occurred.

Witnesses said she waved away passers-by, went through his pockets, and then stole the wedding ring he had worn for 44 years.

A witness chased and caught Sekulovska.

The prosecution argued that the delay in calling an ambulance had effectively been a "death sentence" for Suares.

Sekulovska has pleaded not guilty, arguing that the theft was not linked to his death.

A verdict will be known later this month. - Sapa-dpa
