A girl of 16 died after slipping in her high heels and falling under a train.

Megan Moore was running along the platform as the train pulled away.

She had just got out of one of the carriages and was tapping on the window to say goodbye to friends who were still aboard.

'Her best mate was just screaming, it was horrific'
Onlookers told how she plunged through the gap between the platform and the train.

"She got off and started running and then she suddenly slipped," said one 19-year-old witness.

"At one point she was literally in front of me and then seconds later she was on the track.

"Everyone had their head in their hands. Everyone was crying and screaming. Her best mate was just screaming, it was horrific - she was utterly distraught."

Police and paramedics were called to Angmering Station near Littlehampton in West Sussex, but Megan was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is believed that she had been on her way home from a party on Saturday night with her friends.

In a statement released by British Transport Police, her parents Lorraine and Howard and brother Ryan said: "We would like to thank everybody for being so kind and supportive at this sad and difficult time.

"She was a fantastic daughter and sister, a kind, thoughtful and spirited girl who was blossoming into a young lady.

"She will always be loved and missed by her family and many friends."

More than 1 700 people have joined two Facebook groups which have been set up in tribute to Megan, who was from East Preston in West Sussex.

One message, from Anna Gillingham, said: "Rest in peace lovely, you will be deeply missed.

"You were always so happy but at least now you can rest up in heaven."

Another described her as "one of the kindest people ever".

In a further tribute, a friend wrote: "You'll never be forgotten. Lots of love."

Megan had begun a media course at Chichester College in September.

A police spokesman said: "I can confirm that a 16-year-old girl died at Angmering rail station on Saturday.

"The incident was reported to police at 11.57pm and is being treated as non-suspicious.

"It appears that the girl was running alongside the train as it left the platform when she slipped between the platform and the train - which was the 22.17 London Victoria to Bognor Regis service.

"The train performed an emergency stop and halted still partly in the platform." - Daily Mail
