Nicosia - Two Polish men were in Cyprus police custody on Friday in connection with the murder of a Canadian tourist whose body was found at the Aphrodite's Rock tourist landmark near the resort town of Paphos.

Sergy Nalyvaisky, a 39-year-old Canadian of Ukrainian descent, was found at the bottom of a 100-metre cliff by a British hiker.

Police said they believe the body was dumped there after he was killed.

A post mortem indicated that Nalyvaisky had been strangled. He also had multiple head injuries inflicted by a blunt instrument.

The car salesman's body was found on Wednesday, just 24 hours before he was scheduled to leave the island, police said.

Two men, aged 30 and 34, appeared before a Paphos district court on Friday where they were remanded in custody for eight days to help with the police inquiry.

The suspects were arrested after police obtained evidence that they were seen arguing with the Canadian shortly before he was found dead.

The motive for the murder remains unclear.

Cyprus police said they have requested Interpol help for any information about the victim.
