Paris - Well over half of French people are unhappy with President Nicolas Sarkozy's record in office mid-way through his five-year term, according to a poll released on Monday.
Asked to rate Sarkozy's overall record, 58 percent said it was negative, compared to 38 percent who found it to be positive, according to the LH2 poll carried out for the NouvelObs.com news website. Four percent had no opinion.
The breakdown of results shows that one fifth of respondents said the right-wing leader's performance was highly negative, against just six percent who rated it highly positive.
Fully 60 percent said they did not intend to vote for Sarkozy if he stands for re-election in 2012, according to the telephone poll of 1 006 people was carried out on October 23 and 24.

Thirty percent said they would back him in 2012 - roughly the same as his first round score of 31 percent in 2007.
Sarkozy is fighting to reassure voters after his government - already fighting rising unemployment and emerging slowly from recession - was hit by two major political controversies in the space of a few weeks.
The first was a row over his Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand, who came under fierce attack over a book describing his past as a sex tourist in Asia.
In the second, Sarkozy's 23-year-old son Jean gave up a bid to chair the agency that runs France's top business district, bowing to angry accusations of nepotism. - Sapa-AFP
