Berlin - A 41-year-old man from the United States stripped off and strolled through the streets of the southern German city of Nuremberg on Tuesday, telling police he thought it was normal behaviour.

Police arrested the tourist after being alerted by shocked members of the public.

He was not drunk and had not been taking drugs but "he believed it was commonplace to be nude in public in Germany," a police spokesperson said.

The man was carrying his clothes with him in a bag.

German lakes and beaches have special areas for nude bathing and foreign visitors are often surprised to find that users of mixed-sex saunas must be nude.
