London - A British package trip to Lapland for the kids to meet Father Christmas were outraged to be kept waiting for hours to meet an unconvincing Santa who did not so much as speak English, the Daily Telegraph reported on Wednesday.

Disgruntled grandmother Hilary Hughes said: "What we got was Father Christmas standing in the door of a restaurant between the kitchen and the dining area. Behind him were dirty dinner plates and bottles of ketchup.

"Also he didn't speak English and just sat with each child for about 30 seconds," said Hughes, 65, a part-time dinner lady who had forked out £2 500 (about R2 000) to take her two daughters and four grandchildren to the Finnish resort of Saariselka.

Transun Travel, who laid on the trip to "the magical home of the real Father Christmas", began restricting the numbers getting to meet Santa when staff became worried that long queues would lead to missing the flight home.

Witnesses told the Telegraph that a "mini riot" erupted.

Transun spokesperson Charlotte Beckford said the company regretted the incident. "We pride ourselves on our high standards, having operated in Lapland successfully for the past 11 years. We have started immediate investigations," she said. - Sapa-dpa
