Madrid - Students from Madrid's Polytechnic University have designed and built miniature robot bullfighters, programmed to tackle robot bulls, it was reported on Tuesday.

The knee-high robots are the brainchild of a group of industrial engineering students and are to be entered into a cyber-technology competition in the Spanish capital.

Sources said the "bullfighters" have a small red balloon attached to their body in place of the traditional cape. The mechanical matador must dodge the "bull", which is armed with head-mounted cameras capable of detepcting the red colour, and which attempts to pierce the balloon.

Real bulls, slaughtered in ritual battles in Spain every year, could not be reached for comment, but it is assumed they approve. - Saa-dpa
