Stockholm - A Swedish harness horse racer and three of his horses were attacked during a weekend training session - but one of the horses saw off the bear with a kick, news reports said Monday.

Bjorn Johansson said he was in his carriage pulled by one of his horses with two others tethered to the sulky in the western province of Varmland.

Suddenly the bear ran out of the forest and attacked one of the horses tethered behind Johansson's carriage.

The first horse reared up and Johansson was thrown out of his sulky, cracking several ribs. However, one of the other horses kicked the bear so hard that it fell to the ground.

Johansson approached the seemingly lifeless animal with an axe when it suddenly stirred, and limped off into the forest.

"I think one of its legs was broken," Johansson told Stockholm tabloid Aftonbladet.

Veterinarians were to inspect the horses on Monday and police said they would launch a search for the bear to determine how badly injured it was.

"An injured bear can be very dangerous," a police spokesman said.

The incident occurred near RansNter about 330km west of Stockholm. Animal experts said it was unusual for bears to attack horses. - Sapa-dpa
