Sydney - Australia's birthrate is soaring because some women are giving birth just to get hold of the government's baby bonus.

Adelaide-based social worker Sue Vardon said on Monday there had been a spike in the number of babies being handed over by their mothers into the care of the state in the three years since the government began paying a bounty for every new baby born.

The baby bonus is now AUS$5 000 (about R) is tax-free and goes to married and unmarried mothers alike.

"Are there lots of people now who are having babies because there's a AUS$5 000 payment out there?" Vardon told national broadcaster ABC.

"We know that some young women are stood over for the AUS$5 000 with their druggie friends and they're having babies every year because of it."

There were 265,922 births last year - the highest since 1971. - Sapa-DPA
