Gaza - Israeli forces killed two Palestinian gunmen who tried to attack a Jewish settlement bloc in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, the army and militant sources said.
An army spokesperson said troops and military aircraft fired on the Palestinians as they planted a bomb outside Gush Katif. Israeli security sources had put the number of dead gunmen at three, but the army spokesperson said only two bodies were found.
Islamic Jihad, a militant group spearheading a four-year-old Palestinian uprising, claimed responsibility for the attack and confirmed that two of its men were killed.
The gunmen shot back before they were killed, wounding an Israeli soldier, Israeli security sources said.

Palestinian militants have stepped up attacks in Gaza since Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced a plan to withdraw troops and settlers from the coastal strip next year.
Israel has vowed to crush the Gaza militants, fearing they could embolden gunmen in the West Bank, another territory that Palestinians want for a state.
